About the Owner of Themes :
Chris DeMel and his wife Claudia González Vallejo moved to Athens, Ohio, in the summer of 1996. Born in Sri Lanka, Chris is an entrepreneurial importer and whole seller of home and garden wares, organic medicinal herbs, and culinary spices. Claudia was born in Chile and is a professor at Ohio University. Derek, their 7 year old son, is a proud Athenian.
Opening Themes was born out of Chris's travels. As part of his import business, Chris is constantly attending trade-shows in many parts of the world. Chris and Claudia have also lived in many exciting cities and enjoy products that reflect people's artistic talents and poetic visions-products of outstanding quality, beauty and cultural richness.
"When more of our choices are being determined by mega-corporations, it is refreshing to find products that push the boundaries of conformity."
A desire to experience different cultures brought Chris and Claudia to the United States; wishing to share that experience with their friends and customers inspired them to open Themes in December 2000.
